In nationwide research founded by Harvard, the National Healthcare Safety Network severely underreported Federal data for more than 16,000 COVID-19 deaths and 68,000 cases among nursing home residents.
Karen Shen, PH.D., co-author, stated, “It stresses the importance of requiring reporting as soon as possible and trying to maintain high data quality standards.” “That just really complicated knowing what was going on early in the pandemic, and I think that probably delayed any reactions or mirroring policies that would have been helpful.”
In 2020 nursing homes were required to report facility conditions via the National Healthcare Safety Network’s long-term care COVID-19 module, no less than weekly. Additionally, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services also stated nursing homes would be required to report COVID-19 infections directly to the CDC. This type of reporting made it difficult to get an accurate picture of the total impact.
It’s clear by the missed data and lack of accurate reporting one year after this rule was invoked that there is a strong need to adopt and enforce standard data reporting. Long-term care facilities have slowly been adopting electronic health records and other technologies to drive operational efficiencies and improve the quality of care. Yet, they are lagging in reporting accurate and real-time data.
The release of PDPM (Patient-Driven Payment Model) in October of 2019 has reshaped the operating landscape of SNFs. If you understand the importance of accurately collecting and using the data, you will see success in many areas.
- Continued Improvement in Efficiency of Care
- Saving Through Resource Management
- Identifying Trends in MDS Assessments
- Protection from Audits and Takebacks
